Representation Analysis

Representation is the way certain groups of people are represented by the media and are classified upon their characteristics.

H&M "close the loop"

This advertisement promotes the recycling of clothes while showing a variety of models that are different sizes, races, ethnicities, genders, ages and that are expressing themselves in distinct manners. The ad ends connecting with environmentalism and water conservation.
In this ad, people that are rarely represented in fashion advertisements include elders, different religions represented by men, and overweight people. For the audience, it could serve as a mean of empowerment thought it provides different styles of people for various groups, but there are some representations that are left behind. Often in fashion commercials, the woman figure is represented with a stereotypical body with no hair whatsoever, but here we see an example of how different women can be in fashion.

Axe body spray commercial

This commercial dehumanizes the women by representing them as animals going after their prey.  There's a stampede of women in bikini running through rough terrains just to get to the single man spraying axe over his body, this advertisement then ends with the phrase "spray more, get more."
This ad minimizes the representation of the female figure to the point where they aim for their desired audience, men, and attain losing support from the majority of women around the world.
All about this advertisement is about is aiming to appeal to the male audience with the purpose of them buying their product.

↬Content:
Drama films have the genre convention of "exhibiting real-life situations with realistic characters, settings, and storylines." Mostly the heart of the genre drama consists of some form of conflict, depictions of difficulties, struggles, and mental or physical pain. In this genre, we can see that the films have a steady increase which then builds up tension. Ultimately, the goal is to strive to move the audience emotionally.  Also, there are some subgenres that put their own twist to these conventions. The sub-dramas are meant to reach a wider audience, biography, courtroom, dramedy, historical, period piece, tragedy, romance.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Joker are some examples of drama conventions where the film emphasizes realism, uses dramatic music, and has a relatable main character.

↬Production techniques:
In productions like Forrest Gump directed by Robert Zemeckis, it is often used dull lighting when referring to emotional parts of the movie, special effects that reinforce the idea of realism of the movie. Also, the film uses sentimental and gentle music that aids to represent the calmness and innocence of the main character. It uses clear long and close-up shots and angles to represent each character of the movie. This movie is about a man with low I. Q. who faces many incidences throughout his life, but he doesn't let those interfere with his happiness, throughout his life he is told what life is about and that not everything happens in a miracle, but for a reason. In the end, Forrest comes to his own perspective. The drama develops as the main character, Forrest grows up and is able to live through some of most historical events of the mid 20th century.

Other movies like The King directed by David Michod, dull and darker light to emphasize the tragedy happening throughout the plot of the movie. The film is based on the life of Prince Hal during 1415, at this time France and New England were at war and Hal, heir to the throne is crowned King Henry V. A series of close-ups and low angles are seen throughout the movie to show each character and how it relates to the main character.
